Ship Also Carried Draft of Imperials En Route to Siberia

Halifax, N.S. Dec. 26

The soldiers who returned on the Northland were on their way to their homes at noo by special trains, a few who could not be accommodated going by regular express. The men for Winnipeg and points west, as well as those for Quebec city, left about ten o’clock, and those for Montreal and Ontario points some time after midnight. When a very large number of returned men are sent to their respective districts for discharge, but with a smaller number as on the Northland, Halifax is made the discharge depot and the men are thus enabled to go direct to their homes without further delay. On the first train there were fife officers and 541 men, on the second 450.

With the Northland also came a draft of Imperials for Siberia who left here for Portland, Oregon. The health officer, Dr. McKay, received instructions at eleven-thirty today to allow the ship to dock and disembark. He found five soldiers had been vaccinated and the man with the smallpox properly isolated. This man and his roommate were sent to the quarantine station. The roommate could have gone along with the others but he preferred to stick to his friend and stay behind in quarantine.
