Service Biography

Peter Papineau was born at St. Regis, Quebec, on 17 August 1881. A labourer, he enlisted at Cornwall, Ontario, on 10 September 1915 with the 77th Overseas Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He sailed for England aboard RMS Missanabie in June 1916, transferred to the 47th Battalion and proceeded to France. On 10 November 1916 he suffered a gunshot wound to the right buttock/back in the Somme area. After treatment in France and England he recovered and returned to duty. Papineau was awarded the Military Medal. He returned to Canada in 1919 and was honourably discharged at Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 27 September 1919 following demobilization.

Notes

At enlistment Papineau was described as 5 feet 7 inches tall, with a dark complexion, brown eyes and black hair. A black mole was recorded about one inch below and to the outer side of the left angle of his mouth.

Additional Service Notes

Peter Papineau enlisted at Cornwall, Ontario, on 10 September 1915 with the 77th Overseas Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. He sailed from Halifax aboard RMS Missanabie on 19 June 1916, arrived in England on 28 June, transferred to the 47th Battalion, and proceeded to France in August. He was wounded by a gunshot in the right buttock/back in the Somme area on 10 November 1916 and was treated in France and England before returning to duty. He later received treatment for a sprained right ankle and continued active service. He was awarded the Military Medal. He returned to Canada and was honourably discharged at Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 27 September 1919 following demobilization.

Father Angus Papineau was named as next of kin, with the address St. Regis Island, Quebec. A family particulars form dated 29 May 1916 records his father as living. Papineau reported that he was unmarried, not a widower, and had no children; the form also records no insurance.
