John Leahy was born at Hemmingford, Quebec, on 8 October 1895. A farmer, he was drafted under the Military Service Act and joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force at Montreal on 17 July 1918 as Private 3087661 with the 1st Depot Battalion, 1st Quebec Regiment. His father, Patrick Leahy of Hemmingford, was named as next of kin. Leahy served in Canada and was discharged on demobilization at Montreal on 13 January 1919.
