Service Biography

Norris George McIntyre was born on 9 May 1921 in Hinchinbrook, Huntingdon, Quebec. His service papers usually spell his surname MacIntyre. He attended public school in Huntingdon through Grade 7 and worked in farming, creamery loading and driving before joining the Army. He was single and named his widowed mother, Agnes, as his next of kin. He enlisted in the Canadian Army at Montreal South on 11 December 1941, service number D-126547, and served in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. After basic training at Huntingdon, he trained at Camp Borden, qualifying as a Class III driver and driver instructor. He became paid Acting Lance Corporal in August 1942 and paid Acting Corporal in November. In April 1943 he joined No. 66 Tank Transporter Company, reverted at his own request to Lance Corporal, and then returned to Private. McIntyre sailed overseas in July 1943 and landed in Britain on 28 July. He transferred to No. 65 Tank Transporter Company in October, qualified as a motorcyclist and later as a 40-ton tank-transporter driver. In early August 1944 he crossed to France. His subsequent northwest European service included France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. He volunteered for Pacific service in May 1945 and returned to Canada in July, but the records do not establish deployment to the Pacific. He subsequently served at Sussex, New Brunswick, and No. 48 training centre at St. Johns, Quebec. In March 1946 he returned to No. 4 District Depot and was attached to a Royal Canadian Engineers company for duty at St. Johns Camp. He was discharged as a Private at Montreal South on 16 May 1946 on normal demobilization. He had secured civilian employment as a transport driver. His records document the 1939–45 Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with clasp, War Medal 1939–45 and General Service War Service Badge. His 1946 records also certify the France and Germany Star; a later medal card crosses out that entry without explanation. McIntyre died on 21 July 1975 at Huntingdon, Quebec.
