Service Biography

Gérard Patrick Quevillon was born at Valleyfield, Quebec, on 14 December 1920, the son of Joseph Quevillon and Bertha Gibault. The family lived at 47 rue St-Théodore. He attended École Émard and completed approximately grade five. French was his principal language. His civilian occupations were recorded as farm hand and day labourer, and an occupational history also reported experience as a waiter. He enlisted at Montreal on 5 April 1940 as a Private in Les Fusiliers Mont-Royal, Canadian Active Service Force, with number D61920. He was medically discharged on 17 May. He re-enlisted in Le Régiment de Maisonneuve on 11 July 1940 under number D57590, trained at Valcartier and returned to the regimental depot in Montreal. On 28 September he was discharged through No. 4 District Depot as not likely to become an efficient soldier. He sought to return to Army service in 1941, but his request was refused. A call-up medical examination in September 1942 found him ineligible for enrolment. Quevillon enlisted again at Quebec on 21 January 1943 in No. 46 Company, Canadian Provost Corps, under number E80246. He was attached to No. 36 Company and trained briefly at Canadian Army Basic Training Centre No. 53, Lauzon. A right-ankle injury on 6 March led to treatment at Quebec Military Hospital and later Clinique Roy-Rousseau, where an infection was drained on 20 March. Following medical assessment, he transferred to No. 5 District Depot and was medically discharged on 29 April 1943. His three completed periods of active service were all in Canada. He received General Service War Service Badge 090513 in August 1942. After his badge and discharge papers were stolen in Montreal in December 1943, he sought replacements; badge 149424 was supplied in April 1945. His War Medal 1939–45 was dispatched in May 1950. His war-service gratuity was calculated as $52.50, based on 220 qualifying days. Later Army orders restored his original number D61920. Quevillon married Germaine Desrochers at Saint-Esprit parish, Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, on 22 December 1979. He died at Hôpital Ste-Anne in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue on 7 September 1992 and was buried in the Field of Honour at Valleyfield Catholic Cemetery.
