Notes
John Wilbur Nussey was born on 27 March 1914 at Brysonville, Quebec. His father was James Henry Nussey, a farmer (James Harry in attestation), and his mother was Janet Cross Bryson, later Mrs. Janet Nussey. He attended McCormick School and Ormstown High School, completing Grade 9; school dates and age at completion vary in later records. He worked as a chauffeur for W. R. Graham Transport at Ormstown from 1931 to 1939, then as a Shell Oil service-station attendant in Montreal. He spoke English fluently and a little French, and played softball and hockey. Married Beulah Elsie Gruer at Riverfield on 26 September 1942, Rev. Brown officiating; no children were reported. Wife’s wartime addresses included 1538 St. Matthieu Street, Montreal; 443 Fourth Avenue, Port Alfred; 44A Bagot Street, Bagotville; and Riverfield. His RCAF entry examination recorded height 64¾ inches, weight 153 pounds, chest 33½ inches fully expanded with 1½ inches expansion, brown hair, hazel eyes, a one-inch scar in the middle of the forehead and vaccination mark on the left arm. At release he weighed 170 pounds and measured 66 inches, with blue eyes and grey hair. He reported approximately 10 years’ farming experience but did not wish to farm after the war; an early employment ambition was work in an airplane factory. Later counselling favoured service-station work, return to his former employer and re-establishment credit, with a Veterans’ Land Act small holding suggested as an alternative. He held New York Life insurance, supported his wife, and purchased Sixth and Seventh Victory Loan bonds. Existing CWVMP structured death date is 18 December 1975; existing notes alternatively give 1978 at Howick. Burial recorded at Riverfield Cemetery. His 1940 militia address entries include Brysonville and 1454 Dorchester Street West, Montreal, with neither clearly cancelled. Recruit training rated his bearing and deportment good and assessment excellent; successful completion certified. The Cartierville course was described as 18 weeks. Later counselling called him bilingual.
