Service Biography
James Stuart (Jim) Karr was born at Empress, Alberta, on 29 June 1920. Educated at Empress and Camrose Lutheran College, he worked as a bookkeeper before joining the RCAF at Regina on 23 May 1941. He qualified as a pilot at Brandon in March 1942 and went to Britain, where he became a flying instructor and was commissioned in March 1943. After further training he joined No. 76 Squadron at Holme-on-Spalding Moor in July 1944, flying Halifax bombers in No. 4 Group, Bomber Command. He completed 33 operational sorties, finishing his tour in January 1945. An engine failure during a daylight operation forced him to return to base; the crew was uninjured. He became Acting Flight Lieutenant in October 1944, returned to Canada in March 1945, and retired as Flight Lieutenant at Calgary on 20 August. Karr later worked at Pincher Creek Co-op and married Marie McCann in 1949; they had sons Donald James and Robert William. He rejoined the RCAF Primary Reserve in 1954 for refresher flying at Lethbridge, serving until 31 March 1958. He died in Calgary on 23 June 2002.
