Notes

Kenneth Gordon Cameron was born on 23 April 1917 at Ville St. Pierre, Quebec, and lived at 47 Sixth Avenue there before enlistment and after release (Montreal postal district 32). The trusted existing profile records death on 13 July 1998 and identifies him as Dr. Ken G. Cameron. He was single, had no children or common-law wife and reported no dependants at release. His father was deceased by September 1940. His mother Johanna (also Joanna/Johana) Cameron was then a widow whom he supported with $20 monthly; his three brothers also contributed. He was the second of four brothers. After her remarriage, service records named her Johanna McLeod at Box 63, R.R. No. 1, Dalkeith, Ontario.

He completed seven years of public school and four years of high school, matriculating in 1935; Grade 12 is also recorded. He studied physics/science for four years at Sir George Williams College and obtained his B.Sc. in May 1939. English was his home, spoken and written language. Before enlistment he worked about fifteen months as an apprentice mechanical draughtsman with Dominion Bridge Co. Ltd., a steel-construction company at Lachine, Quebec. The apprenticeship was incomplete. He was saving to study medicine and did not wish to return to that job. Recorded wages differ between $20 and $30 weekly. An assessment also records driving and mixed-farming experience in Glengarry County, Ontario, although his occupational history says he did not consider himself competent to operate a farm or wish to farm after the war. He was interested in mechanics and chemistry, possibly airplanes; played softball at third base and soccer at centre forward. His personnel assessment rated him cooperative, highly intelligent, ambitious, with good appearance and disposition, and suitable for officer-cadet training, without evidence of commissioning. Earlier interest in research chemistry evolved into a firm medical-career plan.

At enlistment he was 5 feet 9 inches, 137 pounds, with fair complexion and hair, blue eyes, good development and a vaccination scar on the left arm. Chest at full expansion was 36 inches, with expansion recorded as apparently 4½ inches. He wore glasses: entrance acuity 20/70 uncorrected and 20/20 corrected; hearing conversational voice at 20 feet. Left hallux valgus caused no complaint. Medical Category B1 was due to defective vision. August 1942 assessment found myopia, 6/24 corrected to 6/6 in each eye, no occupational restriction and no treatment needed beyond glasses; new vision standards permitted Category A. Later weight was 155 pounds (one assessment height 5 feet 9½ inches), and release weight 146 pounds, with 145 in training paperwork. He received vaccination, T.A.B. and tetanus inoculations in 1940.

Hospital treatment comprised influenza/grippe at Pinewood in September 1941, influenza with benign pneumonia at Farnborough in December 1941 and acute follicular tonsillitis in May 1942. He recovered and returned to duty; tonsillitis was treated with sulphanilamide. December respiratory treatment included pectoral mixture, analgesic tablets, ephedrine nose drops and codeine linctus; follow-up chest films cleared. An April 1942 chest film was normal. A December specialist history records five cigarettes daily and an appendectomy in 1931, conflicting with repeated declarations of no operations. At the October 1945 release board he reported no complaints; chest film and urine were negative, PULHEMS all 1, no treatment recommended. Corrected vision was 20/20; ametropia and onychogryphosis of the right great toenail were noted. He was fit at release.

Dental care included July 1942 amalgam fillings and extraction of the upper-right wisdom tooth; spring 1943 examinations, extractions of upper-right teeth 6 and 7 in May and subsequent care; a gold inlay for the upper-right central incisor authorized July 1943, with a synthetic labial window completed in September; February 1944 restorations and periodontal/prophylactic care; November 1944 scaling and February 1945 restoration. Retirement dental assessment recommended two amalgams and prophylaxis. Civilian dental relief in June–August 1946 provided restorations of the lower-left molars, upper-right central incisor and upper-right second bicuspid, with satisfactory treatment acknowledged. Exact disputed chart notation is retained in the evidence.

After release he pursued medicine at McGill University in Montreal. His return was administratively delayed despite an intended registration before 17 September 1945. He attended pre-medical refresher training from October 1945; Veterans Affairs approved thirteen weeks of Benefit No. 5 at $60 monthly effective 14 October. Training later comprised about 2½ months of refresher work, 34 months recorded as Med. IV at McGill, and a twelve-month internship at Montreal General Hospital, about 48½ months with allowances. Assistance ceased on 30 June 1950. A 30 January 1951 follow-up recorded satisfactory completion and his own medical practice in Montreal, with good prospects and rehabilitation achieved. His later address was 2581 Jean Talon Street East, Montreal, Quebec; the medal application gave Room 420, 660 St. Catherine Street West, Montreal, Quebec.

He held Metropolitan Life and Sun Life insurance. Sun Life received a $4 monthly pay assignment from November 1940; his mother's allotment was $26 from November 1941. At release no dependants' allowance or unrecovered overpayment remained. His war-service gratuity was $1,097.71, recorded as nine monthly instalments of $121.96: $457.50 total-service component, $389.75 overseas and $250.46 supplement, based on 1,845 qualifying days (286 Western Hemisphere, 1,559 overseas). Daily release rates were $2.20 pay, $1.25 subsistence and $0.75 additional pay, total $4.20, with a $126 monthly ceiling. He received $100 clothing allowance, thirty days' pay and credited commencement leave. His 25 September 1940 will was returned on 15 November 1945.

Respirator glasses were ordered through Central Optical Co. Ltd., 1449 St. Alexander Street, Montreal, Quebec (date not given). The September 1943 pay sheet records corporal Group A pay of $2.45 daily and acting-sergeant Group A pay of $2.95, with pay effective 1 September although the appointment is recorded as 15 September. A personnel test recorded 188, Grade A. Training follow-up recorded pension nil. His military work and later medical training are distinct from a wartime commissioned medical appointment.
