Notes
Born at Ludlow, Shropshire, England, on 9 March 1900, Dent left school at about age 13 after Grade VII/eight to nine years of public schooling. He worked as a textile weaver in England from 1913 to 1920 and for the LMS Railway from 1920 to 1925 before emigrating to Canada. From 1926 until enlistment he worked for Montreal Cottons Ltd. in Valleyfield as a rayon and cotton inspector. He was married to Catherine Gaffney-Dent and they had four children. His 1945 rehabilitation interview described him as quiet-spoken, deliberate, mature and experienced in textile work; he intended to return to Montreal Cottons after discharge. Post-service correspondence shows that by 1948 his address was 486 Boulevard du Havre, Valleyfield. In 1948 he returned two older War Service Badges and received replacement General Service badge no. 1016026 and Service badge no. 339104. In 1961 he again corresponded with War Service Records about replacement of an old-type badge. His April 1945 occupational-history form records that he had left school at 13 after eight years of public school, had about fourteen years' experience as a rayon inspector with Montreal Cottons in Valleyfield, and expected to return to that employer; the company had promised him employment after discharge. Rehabilitation records in August and October 1945 show that Montreal Cottons had kept him on leave of absence and that he planned to return to his former work as a rayon/textile inspector. The counsellor described him as quiet-spoken and deliberate, mature, with considerable textile experience, and recommended return to that employment. His War Service Gratuity paperwork records 1,802 days of qualifying service, including 1,444 days of qualifying overseas service, and a gross gratuity of $1,097.67. Postwar badge correspondence shows that he was living at 486 Boulevard du Havre, Valleyfield, by May 1948. The October 1945 rehabilitation assessment described him as keen and deliberate in manner, mature, quiet-spoken and experienced in textile work. It recorded fourteen years as a textile inspector before enlistment and recommended return to that occupation, with weaving as an alternative. In March 1961 War Service Records sent him replacement Silver War Service Badge, General Service Class, no. 1113018 and its certificate, replacing an old-type badge that had been returned to the Department. War Service Gratuity records calculate 1,802 qualifying service days and 1,444 qualifying overseas days, with a gross gratuity of $1,097.67 and $998.56 payable after deductions. The 1948 General Service badge certificate records badge no. 1016026 and address 486 Boulevard du Havre, while the Service Class badge certificate no. 339104 records 427 Boulevard du Havre. The Personnel Selection Record provides a fuller civilian history: Grade VII completed in England at age 13 in 1913; textile weaver in England from 1913-20; L.M.S. Railroad cleaner, greaser and observer from 1920-25; and rayon/cotton inspector with Montreal Cottons Ltd., Valleyfield, from 1926-40. An August 1945 follow-up says Montreal Cottons had kept him on leave of absence and promised him his job on discharge.
