Service Biography

Walter George Currie was born in Montreal on 18 June 1920. He completed Grade 6 at the rural school in Franklin Centre and left school at 13. Before enlistment he helped his father on the family farm at Franklin Centre from 1935 to 1940 and also had about six months' experience driving a truck. He enlisted at Montreal on 25 September 1940. He served in Canada, the United Kingdom and North-West Continental Europe and was discharged as a Trooper of the Canadian Armoured Corps in September 1945. Walter married Barbara Brocklehurst in England on 25 March 1944. In 1945 his mother's difficulty operating the family farm at Franklin Centre led to a recommendation that he return to Canada on compassionate grounds. At discharge he hoped to establish a farm of his own; his counsellor described him as serious, nervous and hard-working and considered him a good medium-build, healthy farm prospect. Walter and Barbara later had children Robert, James and Pamela. Currie died at the Montreal General Hospital on 11 January 2000, aged 79.
