Notes

Born at Brysonville, Quebec, Burton Cairns attended Ormstown High School from 1925 to 1936, completing Grade 10/three years of high school. Before joining the RCAF he did farm work, cabinet work for Henry Morgan's and RCA Victor in Montreal, and worked as a fitter for Noorduyn Aviation at Longue Pointe. He enjoyed woodworking and participated moderately in a variety of sports. He spoke English fluently and some French. He married Eleanor Margaret Moe at Ormstown on 22 June 1944. His release papers in October 1945 still show Brysonville as his civilian address, while final personnel counselling gives a post-discharge mailing address of 950 West 14th Avenue, Vancouver; by 1949 Veterans Affairs records show him at 2058 West 8th Avenue, Vancouver. He intended to train as a cabinet maker after release. A Sixth Victory Loan certificate dated 25 April 1944 records $1,000.00 in Sixth Victory Loan bonds, with six monthly RCAF pay assignments of $16.50 from May through October 1944. A second wartime savings record, dated 23 April 1945 while he was at No. 1 Initial Flying School, shows a $100 Eighth Victory Loan bond purchase through six monthly pay deductions of $16.80. His War Service Gratuity records show $270 payable for qualifying Canadian service, with no overseas-service supplement. On 2 May 1949 Veterans Affairs authorized $270 from his re-establishment credit for furniture from Woodward Stores Ltd.; he was then living at 2058 West 8th Avenue, Vancouver. A medal application mailed in October 1949 gives a later address of 4402 West 22nd Avenue, Vancouver. At release counselling he said he wanted a course in practical or construction carpentry under the Unemployment Insurance Commission. The counsellor considered him a good prospect for training; Cairns said he wanted steady employment and hoped eventually to build a home of his own. His wartime savings records also include a Fifth Victory Loan agreement dated 6 August 1943 for a $500 bond purchased through RCAF pay assignment. On 13 June 1945 a $50 Victory Loan bond was forwarded by registered mail to his wife Eleanor at 225 Elm Avenue, Westmount. Recruiting references from Ormstown High School described him as a faithful worker, especially capable in craftsmanship, mechanics and woodwork, with a satisfactory general school record. His RCAF Educational Achievement Test, taken 30 September 1942, was graded thirteen (13), pass. War Service Grants administration after discharge records a monthly dependent's allowance of $32.20 in issue, with no overpayment of dependent's allowance or assigned pay deductible from his War Service Gratuity. His 1945 RCAF release certificate described him as 5 feet 5½ inches tall, with a medium-dark complexion, blue eyes and dark hair; identifying marks included a scar on the left temple and two scars on the right cheek. His final personnel-counselling form gives his post-discharge mailing address as 950 West 14th Avenue, Vancouver, British Columbia. Wartime dependants' allowance records show $37.20 payable to Eleanor Cairns at 225 Elm Avenue, Westmount. This is distinct from the $32.20 monthly dependants' allowance later recorded in post-discharge War Service Grants administration. A wartime pay record also shows $37.20 dependants' allowance plus $25.00 assigned pay, for a total payment of $62.20 to Eleanor. A separate wartime pay record dated 5 February 1944 shows a $22.00 payment associated with William D. Cairns at Brysonville, Chateauguay County, Quebec. On 18 October 1944 he reported losing his identification card while moving his personal effects from one barrack to another. At release in October 1945, the medical assessment recorded him fit to engage in any type of employment.
