Service Biography

Rolland Benoit was born at Cornwall, Ontario, on 18 August 1915. He completed Grade 4 at Cornwall Public School and worked as a waiter and truck driver. 
He spoke French and English. He first enlisted with the Royal Canadian Engineers in September 1939 and was discharged in November 1939 after a short period of service for an unusual reason; failure to sign his service contract. 
He married Myrtle Lagow at Ottawa on 25 February 1940. Then enlisted at Ottawa on 28 February 1942. He served in Canada as a driver and general-duty soldier,  principally at the Officer Training Centre at Brockville. After training, he went overseas in May 1943 and returned to Canada in December 1943. 
He was discharged medically in February 1944.

He first enlisted with the Royal Canadian Engineers in September 1939 and was discharged in November 1939 after a short period of service. He married Myrtle Lagow at Ottawa on 25 February 1940. Re-enlisting at Ottawa on 28 February 1942, he served in Canada as a driver and general-duty soldier, principally at the Officer Training Centre at Brockville. His record includes repeated periods of absence without leave and detention. Medical assessment in 1943-44 documented longstanding learning and emotional difficulties and concluded that he was unable to meet required military physical standards. He was discharged medically on 2 February 1944. He and Myrtle later had a son, Lees Benoit, born at Valleyfield on 25 July 1945.

After training at No. 31 Training Centre, Cornwall, and the Officer Training Centre, Brockville, he transferred through A-21 Canadian Ordnance Corps Training Centre, Kingston, and served overseas in the United Kingdom from May to December 1943, with reinforcement/holding and employment units and short attachments recorded in the service forms. He returned to Canada in December 1943 and was administered through No. 3 District Depot before medical discharge on 2 February 1944.

Wife Myrtle Lagow Benoit of Huntingdon, Quebec, was his next of kin during the 1942-44 service. They married at Ottawa on 25 February 1940. A 1947 application records their son Lees Benoit, born at Valleyfield, Quebec, on 25 July 1945. His father was Joseph Benoit, a carpenter, and his mother was Dianna Benoit, both associated with 94 Carleton Street, Cornwall; a sister, Irene Benoit, was also recorded in 1947.
