Service Biography

Mervin George Barrington was born in Ormstown on 25 February 1920. He completed Grade 10 at Ormstown Consolidated High School and then graduated from a one-year business course at Sir George Williams Business College in Montreal. Before enlistment he worked for about three years as a clerk in the Osborne Brothers general store in Ormstown. He spoke English and French, played softball and hockey, and enjoyed swimming and hunting. He married Angie Louise on 2 August 1941. After two months of NRMA service at Huntingdon he enlisted for active service in July 1941 and served with the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps. He went overseas in September 1942 and served in the United Kingdom and in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany, rising to Sergeant. He returned to Canada in October 1945 and was discharged on demobilization on 7 December 1945. After the war he planned to return to store work and eventually enter a general merchandising business with his twin brother.

A 1942 personnel interview records that he was married with no children. A 1945 rehabilitation interview notes an identical twin brother with whom he hoped eventually to enter business.
