Service Biography
Dean Lawson Hawkhurst was born on 12 February 1923 in New Brunswick; his naval records give New Castle as his birthplace, while his RCAF records give Newcastle Creek. By the time of his wartime enlistments, he was living at Valleyfield, Quebec. His service records differ on his schooling: his naval enrolment records Grade 9 at Gault Institute, while a June 1943 naval hospital history says he left school at age 16 in Grade 8. His pre-naval occupation is also described differently: the naval enrolment records him as a mechanic helper for Beauharnois Light, Heat & Power, while the 1943 hospital history says he had worked as a labourer for about ten months before joining the Navy. His 1941 RCAF attestation records that he spoke English and French, played hockey and softball, and had spent five years as a Boy Scout. He served briefly in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 before enrolling in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve at Montreal on 29 June 1942 as V-40759. During the Second World War he served in Canada, on the high seas in the Atlantic zone and in Northwest Europe, including service aboard HMCS Baddeck, and attained the rating of Able Seaman. He was discharged at Montreal on 26 October 1945 on demobilization. Dean Hawkhurst died at Valleyfield on 11 June 1998, aged 75.

Notes
The postwar Veterans Affairs vocational-history form labels his 1941 RCAF discharge 'demobilized,' which conflicts with the more detailed contemporaneous October 1941 discharge papers; the latter show that he declined re-mustering to ground duties and requested discharge. At No. 4 Wireless School, Guelph, Ontario, his Wireless Operator (Air Gunner) Course 25 form shows a nominal course span of 1 September to 17 October 1941, but his training was discontinued on 6 October after he had been transferred back one course and, despite additional instruction, again failed the preliminary examinations. The naval enrolment and service records give his birthplace as New Castle, New Brunswick, while the RCAF Record of Service gives Newcastle Creek, New Brunswick. The June 1943 RCN Hospital St. Hyacinthe history records that he had worked as a labourer for about ten months before joining the Navy and says he left school at age 16 in Grade 8, differing from the RCNVR attestation's Grade 9 at Gault Institute. His February 1941 RCAF attestation says he attended Gault Institute from 1929 to 1939, worked as a twister for Montreal Cotton in 1939–1940, then worked as a self-employed newspaper agent in 1940–1941; it also records English and French, no flying experience, moderate hockey and softball, and five years as a Boy Scout. Most RCAF discharge records cite KR(Air) 392(12) as the discharge authority; one last-pay certificate instead gives KR(Air) 392(2).

His naval postings included HMCS Montreal, York, St. Hyacinthe, Cornwallis, Stadacona, Baddeck and Donnacona. His documented theatres included Canada, the high seas in the Atlantic zone and Northwest Europe. He was rated Able Seaman during his naval service and was discharged at Montreal on 26 October 1945 on demobilization. Before his naval enlistment he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force as R104810 from 16 May to 31 October 1941. He was selected for aircrew/Air Gunner training but did not complete the wireless-operator course; after declining re-mustering to ground duties he was discharged.
Additional Next of Kin Notes
At naval enrolment his next of kin was his father, Gordon Hawkhurst, of 420 Boulevard du Havre, Valleyfield. RCAF family particulars give his father's fuller name as Jay Gordon Hawkhurst, an electrical engineer, and his mother as Hazel Annie Hawkhurst; other RCAF/naval records use Gordon Hawkhurst and Hazel Hawkhurst. The Alexandra Hospital admission form of 13 June 1943 gives his mother, Mrs. H. Hawkhurst, at 420 Ducharme Boulevard, Valleyfield, differing from the 420 Boulevard du Havre address used in the family particulars and other service records. A June 1943 naval hospital history also recorded four brothers alive and well. His 1998 obituary names his wife Claire Courchesne; children Terry (France), Linda (Mario), Peter and the late Brenda; grandchildren Brian and Michelle; brothers Kenneth (Mary), the late Donald, the late Reginald and Murray.
