Rene Cardinal was born at Valleyfield, Quebec, on 14 October 1919. Before the war he worked as a truck driver in Valleyfield. He enlisted at Montreal, Quebec, on 27 June 1940 as D62293 and served as a Private with Les Fusiliers Mont-Royal. He served in the United Kingdom and took part in the Dieppe Raid on 19 August 1942, where he was captured and became a prisoner of war in Germany. Liberated in 1945, he returned to Canada and was discharged at Montreal South, Quebec, on 12 July 1945.

Completed Grade 5 at a Valleyfield urban school in 1933 at age 14; the attestation/qualification record names École Garneau, Valleyfield, and records six years of schooling. French-speaking and able to get along in English. Prewar employment included work as a driver's helper for a coal dealer (1933-35), usher/watchman in a theatre (1935-37), a short period at Dominion Textile, and truck driving for Laurentian Beverages Co. (1937-40). At his original June 1940 medical examination he was 5 ft 4 in tall and weighed 156 lb, with a 35 in chest and 3 in expansion; complexion dark, eyes gray and hair dark. The examination also recorded a tattoo on the left arm. After the war he returned to reserve/militia service under service no. D442471. His Canadian Forces Decoration application credits wartime service with Les Fusiliers Mont-Royal, service with 61 L.A.A. Regiment (Militia) from 25 March 1958, and later service with D Company, 4e Bataillon, Royal 22e Régiment (Militia); the record notes award of the Canadian Forces Decoration in 1965.

Additional Service Notes
Served from 27 June 1940 to 12 July 1945, including Canada from 27 June 1940 to 16 February 1941, overseas from 17 February 1941 to 29 May 1945, and Canada again from 30 May 1945 to discharge. He served principally as a rifleman with Les Fusiliers Mont-Royal, with a period as a driver, and was qualified as driver i/c. He took part in the Dieppe Raid on 19 August 1942, where he was captured and became prisoner of war no. 25334. His POW correspondence identifies Stalag VIII-B, its redesignation as Stalag 344, and a later transfer to Stalag IV-B. A liberated-prisoner medical history records that he was liberated on 16 April 1945. He was admitted to No. 4 Canadian General Hospital on 26 April 1945 with an alveolar abscess of the left jaw and discharged to No. 1 Canadian Repatriation Depot on 30 April 1945. He returned to Canada on 30 May 1945 and was discharged on demobilization at Montreal South, Quebec, on 12 July 1945.
