Service Biography

Willard McKenzie Allen was born at Huntingdon, Quebec, on 19 October 1910. Before the war he worked in Montreal for Might Directories Ltd. as an account executive and had also trained as a watchmaker. He enrolled in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve in December 1940 and entered active service on 1 January 1941. He rose from Probationary Sub-Lieutenant to Lieutenant and served in Canada and overseas. In 1944 he proceeded to the United Kingdom, served as Executive Officer of Teme and HMCS Annan, and later returned to Canada for service at Stadacona, Kings, Hochelaga and Donnacona. His naval records credit 1,716 days of active service, including 793 days of qualifying overseas service. He was demobilized on 12 September 1945. Allen died in Ottawa on 4 October 1970 and was interred at Mount Royal Cemetery.

Notes

Before enlistment Allen had four years of high-school education and had completed a watchmaking apprenticeship. At enlistment he worked for Might Directories Ltd. in Montreal; the occupational-history form describes him as an Account Executive, while his attestation describes his occupation more generally as Salesman. He spoke and read English. His enlistment physical description recorded brown hair, blue eyes, fair complexion and an appendix scar. Medical records also document lumbosacral arthritis treated by physiotherapy in December 1943 and a longstanding history of nasal obstruction; after recurrent acute sinusitis in 1944 he was assessed for vasomotor/allergic rhinitis.

Additional Service Notes

Served in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve. Enrolled on 9 December 1940 and entered active service on 1 January 1941. He served at Montreal, Royal Roads, Venture, St. Hyacinthe and Three Rivers, and was promoted to Lieutenant (Temporary) effective 1 April 1942. In January 1944 he was appointed to HMS Moorsom for passage to the United Kingdom; his Royal Navy service began on 7 February 1944. He served as Executive Officer of Teme and, from 11 March 1944, HMCS Annan, with administrative attachment to HMCS Niobe. His Royal Navy service summary lists courses in tactical work, radar, damage control and asdic. After returning to Canada he served at HMCS Stadacona, Kings, HMCS Hochelaga and HMCS Donnacona before demobilization on 12 September 1945.
