Service Biography

Norman Lionel Hodges was born in Montreal, Quebec, on 17 December 1914. Before the war he worked as a typewriter mechanic and had served with the Royal Montreal Regiment in the Non-Permanent Active Militia. He enlisted for active service at Westmount, Quebec, on 23 May 1940 as D-77282. He served overseas in the United Kingdom and France with the Royal Montreal Regiment, 32nd Canadian Reconnaissance Regiment and 28th Canadian Armoured Regiment, and was promoted to Sergeant. He embarked from the United Kingdom on 22 July 1944 and landed in France on 24 July. He was taken prisoner on 14 August 1944; official casualty records reported him missing in action the following day. He was held at Stalag 357 as POW no. 86200 until liberation in May 1945, returned to Canada in July, and was discharged at Montreal South on 27 August 1945 on demobilization. Norman Lionel Hodges died on 5 June 2000 at Lakeshore General Hospital.

Notes

Completed 7th grade public school in 1927 and later attended two years of night school taking high-school subjects. Worked as a message boy for Modern Shoe Repairing (1927–28), as a mechanic on typewriters and business machines for Underwood Elliott Fisher (1928–38), and as a typewriter mechanic for L.D. Smith Typewriter Sales Co. in Montreal (1938–40). English speaking. A 1945 Veterans Affairs assessment described him as a fully trained soldier, qualified instructor and promoted Sergeant; he was interested in postwar sales work and was also considered employable as a business-machine mechanic.

Served in Canada from enlistment in May 1940 until late August 1940, then overseas in the United Kingdom and France until July 1945. Served with the Royal Montreal Regiment, 32nd Canadian Reconnaissance Regiment and 28th Canadian Armoured Regiment. Embarked from the United Kingdom on 22 July 1944 and disembarked in France on 24 July. He was taken prisoner on 14 August 1944; official casualty reporting listed him missing in action on 15 August.
