Service Biography
Bert Thomas Swartz was born at Shawville, Quebec, on 8 April 1915, the son of Irvin and Mary Mackie Swartz. He married Hazel Marion Swartz at Smiths Falls, Ontario, on 15 October 1941 and was living in Valleyfield when he enlisted in the Canadian Army at Ottawa on 3 June 1942 as C-94805. Before enlistment he had worked in freight carting, as a butcher and store clerk, and at the Nitro Explosives plant in Valleyfield. He served with the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps, completed Technical Stores training, qualified Driver I/C and received Storeman Class C trade pay. Swartz served in Canada, the United Kingdom and Northwest Europe; he embarked from the United Kingdom on 26 September 1944 and disembarked in France on 28 September. He returned to the United Kingdom in December 1944. He died in England on 1 August 1945 from occlusion of the orifices of the coronary arteries, aged 30, and was buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey.
