Completed junior matriculation at Ormstown in 1933 and later took a one-year automobile-mechanics and electrical course at Montreal Technical School. Before enlistment he worked as a chauffeur/service-station attendant and mechanic in the Montreal area and for approximately one year before enlistment as an attendant at a farm and vehicle mechanic school in Ormstown. His personnel-selection record describes him as fully qualified as a motor mechanic and records interests in swimming, hunting and fishing. His 11 September 1939 enlistment medical recorded a fair complexion, blue eyes and fair hair, Category A, with the special remark 'Unfit for artillery' and a linear scar outside the left knee; his measured height, weight, chest and chest expansion are retained in the structured fields. During service he qualified as Fitter, Group A, Class I on 20 July 1940 and later completed a fitter course at Norton Motors Ltd., Birmingham. A 1945 personnel assessment described him as a healthy, husky, red-haired young man, married with one small daughter, who hoped to settle on a farm near Montreal after discharge. His 1981 obituary states that he was a retired Bell Canada employee.
