Service Biography
Benoit Pilon was born at Beauharnois, Quebec, on 14 June 1916. He completed Grade 6 at Collège de Montréal and before the war worked on his father's farm, as a sailor on lake steamers, and as a labourer for Aluminum Alloys at Beauharnois. He enlisted at Montreal South on 3 May 1944 as D-145124. He first trained with the Royal Canadian Artillery and later remustered to the Canadian Infantry Corps, serving with Canadian training, reinforcement and repatriation organizations. Of his 955 days of qualifying service, 717 were overseas, from November 1944 until November 1946. His overseas service included periods of hospitalization for infectious hepatitis and other illnesses, and in 1946 he was granted leave to travel in France and neighbouring European countries. He returned to Canada in November 1946 and was discharged at Montreal South on 13 December 1946 on demobilization.
Benoit Pilon died at Salaberry-de-Valleyfield on 5 November 1978 and is buried in the Field of Honour at Valleyfield Catholic Cemetery.

Notes
Completed Grade 6 at Collège de Montréal in June 1933 and spoke French. Before enlistment he had worked about three years on his father's farm, three years as a sailor on lake steamers, and about 1½ years as a labourer for Aluminum Alloys at Beauharnois. The discharge counselling report described him as a cooperative young man with good work habits who intended to return to labouring work in the Beauharnois district.

Served from 3 May 1944 to 13 December 1946, a total of 955 qualifying days. Of these, 717 days were overseas: 26 November 1944 to 12 November 1946. He initially trained with the Royal Canadian Artillery as a Gunner, then remustered to the Canadian Infantry Corps in December 1944 and served with the 1st and 4th Canadian Infantry Training Regiments. He later again appears as a Gunner with reinforcement and repatriation organizations. His overseas medical history included infectious hepatitis in March-April 1945 and recurrent urethritis/venereal-disease treatment during 1946. In August 1946 he was granted privilege leave to France with authority to visit Belgium, Holland and Switzerland. He returned to Canada in November 1946 and was discharged at Montreal South on 13 December 1946 on demobilization.
