Charles Sedgewick Roman was born in Montreal, Quebec, on 9 January 1922 and grew up in Valleyfield, the son of Dr. Charles Lightfoot Roman and Jessie Sedgewick. He attended Galt Institute until he turned 18 (Grade 10) in 1940). He was working as a thermometer operator when he enlisted in the Canadian Active Service Force at Montreal South on 16 July 1941. Roman served with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps and proceeded overseas in November 1941. After serving in the United Kingdom, he went to France in June 1944 with RCASC organizations supporting the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. He advanced from Private through acting appointments to Corporal and Acting Sergeant. In 1945 a recurrent right-ankle injury sustained while playing volleyball required hospital and convalescent treatment, after which he returned to duty. Roman returned to Canada in March 1946 and was discharged on demobilization on 24 April 1946.
