Francois Pierre Weinfield was born at Sainte-Philomène, Chateauguay County, Quebec, on 9 June 1891. At recruitment he was single, Roman Catholic, a fireman, and living at 1608 Saint-Hubert Street, Montreal. His mother, Mrs. Pierre Weinfield, at the same address was next of kin. He reported four years of Active Militia service with the 65th Regiment; the separate previous military/naval service line is marked Nil. His Medical History Sheet records age 27 years 1 month, height 5 ft 8½ in, weight 138 lb, chest 34–37 in, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark brown hair, good physical development and category A2.

Drafted under the Military Service Act and joined at Montreal on 15 July 1918 as Private 3087610 with the 1st Depot Battalion, 1st Quebec Regiment. He had already served four years with the 65th Regiment Active Militia. He embarked from Canada on 10 September 1918 and arrived in England on 25 September 1918, where the records support service with the 10th Canadian Reserve Battalion and later demobilization/concentration processing at Kinmel Park. His rank progressed from Private to Lance Corporal and later Sergeant. He was struck off strength of the Overseas Military Forces of Canada after sailing for Canada on 26 June 1919, was taken on strength of District Depot No. 4 Disposal Station F at Montreal effective the same date, and was discharged at Montreal on 8 July 1919 for demobilization under Routine Order 1420.
