Bertie Armitage Smith was born at Beauharnois, Quebec, on 26 August 1895 and worked as a clerk with the Canadian Pacific Railway. He enlisted at Montreal on 4 April 1916 as Driver 347677 with the Canadian Field Artillery. He served overseas with the 4th, later 5th, Divisional Ammunition Column and served in France. After returning to Canada in 1919 he was treated for scabies at Ste. Anne de Bellevue and was discharged at Montreal on 10 July 1919 on demobilization.
