Ernest Rolland was born at St-Étienne-de-Beauharnois, Quebec, on 7 September 1897. A farmer and Roman Catholic, he was called up under the Military Service Act. He entered service at Montreal on 22 August 1918 as Private 3167081 with the 2nd Depot Battalion, 2nd Quebec Regiment, Canadian Expeditionary Force. His service remained in Canada. He was discharged at Montreal on 3 February 1919 during demobilization under the Farmer's Leave procedure.

Notes
At his August 1918 medical examination Rolland was recorded as 5 ft 3 in tall, 113 lb, with brown complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. The Medical History Sheet records a chest measurement of 31–34 in with 3 in expansion. The earlier recruit form records 37 in fully expanded with 3 in expansion; the later formal medical measurement is used for the structured chest field.

Drafted under the Military Service Act, Ernest Rolland signed his recruit declaration at Montreal on 15 July 1918 and entered service as Private 3167081 with the 2nd Depot Battalion, 2nd Quebec Regiment on 22 August 1918, the date from which his casualty form states that service reckoned. His service remained in Canada. He was demobilized under the Farmer's Leave procedure and was struck off strength as discharged at Montreal on 3 February 1919.
