John McCuaig was born at Alexandria, Ontario, on 24 November 1892. A foreman in a cotton mill, he was drafted under the Military Service Act and joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force at Montreal on 19 August 1918 as Private 3091209. He initially served with the 1st Depot Battalion, 1st Quebec Regiment, and later with the 4th Detachment, Canadian Garrison Regiment. His military service was entirely in Canada. He was discharged at Montreal on 10 September 1919 on demobilization.
