Service Biography

Philorum Martel was born in Montreal, Quebec, on 1 October 1895 and was living at St-Chrysostome in Chateauguay County when he was drafted under the Military Service Act in 1918. A single Roman Catholic farmer, he reported at Montreal on 17 July 1918 as Private 3167483 with the 2nd Depot Battalion, 2nd Quebec Regiment. He was transferred to the Canadian Engineers and served in Canada as a Sapper with the Engineer Training Depot at St. Johns, Quebec. He was discharged there on 6 January 1919 on demobilization.

Notes

At calling up he was single, Roman Catholic and a farmer, living at St-Chrysostome in Chateauguay County, Quebec. The recruit and medical forms record a height of 5 feet 5 inches, weight 130 pounds, chest 34 to 37 inches (3-inch expansion), fair complexion, grey eyes and fair hair. He was placed in Category A. He reported no Active Militia membership and no previous military or naval service.

His casualty and medical records show transfer to the Canadian Engineers on the same date. He subsequently served in Canada as a Sapper with the Engineer Training Depot at St. Johns, Quebec. A leave entry dated 31 October 1918 and two later entries written 'F.L.' appear on his casualty card; the abbreviation is preserved as recorded. He did not proceed overseas. He was struck off strength on 6 January 1919 and discharged on demobilization under Part II Order No. 6.
