Drafted under the Military Service Act and enlisted at Kingston, Ontario, on 17 May 1918. He initially served with the 73rd Battery, Canadian Field Artillery, and was transferred to the Canadian Siberian Expeditionary Force, serving with the 259th Battalion, Canadian Rifles. He embarked from Vancouver in December 1918, served in Siberia, and returned to Canada in May 1919. He was discharged at Montreal on 11 June 1919 on demobilization.
