Joseph Edward Sauve was born at St-Timothee, Quebec, on 27 March 1897. A single Roman Catholic farmer living at Valleyfield, Quebec, he had previously served eight months in the Royal Flying Corps as a Cadet Pilot. Drafted under the Military Service Act, he entered Canadian Expeditionary Force service at Toronto on 25 October 1918 as Private 3042070. He later served with the Canadian Army Medical Corps at Whitby Military Hospital and St. Andrew's Military Hospital in Toronto. He served entirely in Canada and was discharged at Toronto on 12 July 1919 on demobilization.

A detailed Medical History Sheet dated 4 November 1918 recorded Category C2, height 5 ft 4½ in, weight 123½ lb and chest 30–33½ in.
