Joseph Poirier was born at Saint-Timothée, Quebec, on 4 February 1887. A single Roman Catholic barber living at Huntingdon, Quebec, he was drafted under the Military Service Act and joined at Montreal on 24 June 1918 as Private 3163999 with the 2nd Depot Battalion, 2nd Quebec Regiment. He was taken on strength of the 4th Battalion, Canadian Garrison Regiment on 2 August 1918. In September 1918 he spent eight days in hospital in Montreal following an infected injury after a fall. He was discharged at Montreal on 4 December 1918 on demobilization. His conduct was recorded as Very Good.
