Service Biography

Joseph Major was born in Valleyfield, Quebec, on 23 July 1897 and worked as a labourer before the war. Drafted under the Military Service Act, he attested at Montreal on 14 August 1918 as Private 3171893 with the 2nd Depot Battalion, 2nd Quebec Regiment. He sailed for England aboard HMT Saturnia, disembarking at Liverpool on 30 August, and joined the 10th Canadian Reserve Battalion at Bramshott. In October 1918 he was hospitalized at Edinburgh with influenza and later convalesced at Epsom. He returned to Canada during the demobilization period and was discharged at Montreal on 4 July 1919.

Joseph Major was born on 23 July 1897 at Valleyfield, Quebec, and lived on Plamondon Street in Valleyfield before service. He was single, Roman Catholic and employed as a labourer. His father, Joseph Major, was his next of kin. Drafted under the Military Service Act, 1917, he reported no previous military service. His medical examination recorded height 5 feet 4 inches, weight 130 pounds, chest 31 to 34 inches, brown complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, good physical development and Category A2.

Major was drafted under the Military Service Act and attested at Montreal on 14 August 1918 as Private 3171893, 2nd Depot Battalion, 2nd Quebec Regiment; his formal medical examination/joining entry followed on 15 August. He embarked for England aboard HMT Saturnia and disembarked at Liverpool on 30 August 1918. He was taken on strength of the 10th Canadian Reserve Battalion at Bramshott effective 1 September 1918. On 27 October he was admitted to the 2nd Scottish General Hospital, Edinburgh, with influenza, transferred to the Military Convalescent Hospital at Epsom on 16 November, and discharged from that convalescent treatment on 9 December 1918. On 24 June 1919 he was struck off strength of the 10th Canadian Reserve Battalion at Ripon to proceed to Canada. District Depot No. 4 records then show him taken on strength of Dispersal Station F, Montreal, effective 25 June and struck off strength for demobilization effective 4 July 1919. He was discharged at Montreal on 4 July 1919 on demobilization.
