Service Biography

Cyril Malboeuf was born at Benson Mines, New York, on 10 March 1899 and was living in Valleyfield, Quebec, where he worked as a weaver. He enlisted at Valleyfield on 23 March 1916 as Private 660736 with the 163rd Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. Although his attestation represented him as 18 and born at Valleyfield, his parents later swore that he was 17 and had enlisted without their consent, and requested his return. His military record shows that he was illegally absent from 1 May 1916 and was struck off strength as a deserter on 31 May 1916. He did not proceed overseas with the battalion.

At enlistment Malboeuf was a single Roman Catholic weaver from Valleyfield, Quebec. He was 5 ft 4 in tall, with a 35 in chest and 3 in expansion, fair complexion, blue eyes and fair hair. His father Joseph Malboeuf of Valleyfield was next of kin. He reported no Active Militia service and no previous military or naval service.

A sworn affidavit made by his parents, Joseph Malboeuf and Alice Gibeau, states that he was actually born 10 March 1899 at Benson Mines, New York, and had enlisted at age 17 without their consent. His parents asked for their son's return. His enlistment description records height 5 feet 4 inches, fully expanded chest 35 inches with 3 inches expansion, fair complexion, blue eyes and fair hair. Although the 163rd Battalion's card was later stamped UNIT SAILED 27 NOV 1916, that unit movement occurred after Malboeuf had ceased serving and is not evidence that he went overseas.
