Donat Masse was born at Valleyfield, Quebec, on 4 August 1897. A labourer living in Montreal, he was drafted under the Military Service Act and joined the 2nd Depot Battalion, 2nd Quebec Regiment on 9 January 1918. His service remained in Canada. He was hospitalized in February and March 1918 with chronic bronchitis and an infection of the accessory nasal sinuses and was discharged as medically unfit on 19 March 1918.
