Service Biography

Rosario Lalonde was born in Valleyfield, Quebec, on October 26, 1896. A machinist living at 143 Delinelle Street in Montreal, he was drafted under the Military Service Act and joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force at Montreal on May 20, 1918. He initially served as a private with the 2nd Depot Battalion, 2nd Quebec Regiment, and was later taken on strength of the 4th Battalion, Canadian Garrison Regiment. His wartime service was entirely in Canada. In July 1918 he spent 12 days at Montreal General Hospital for the effects of a serious left-hand injury sustained in a drill-press accident in May 1917, before his military service; the condition was recorded as not due to service. Lalonde remained a private and was discharged at Montreal on December 2, 1918, on demobilization of the C.E.F. His conduct and character were rated "Very Good."

Notes

Pre-service left-hand injury: in May 1917 Lalonde caught his left hand in a drill press, fracturing the lower third of the radius and the shaft of the second metacarpal. By July 1918 there was malunion of the second metacarpal, limitation of index-finger flexion, weakened/limited pronation and supination, and a dorsal ganglion over the fourth metacarpal. Removal of the ganglion was recommended, but he refused. The condition was recorded as not due to service and, at discharge, as pre-existing without aggravation during service.

Additional Service Notes

Drafted under the Military Service Act, 1917. Served in Canada only. Units documented: 2nd Depot Battalion, 2nd Quebec Regiment; 4th Battalion, Canadian Garrison Regiment. Rank throughout: Private.

Additional Next of Kin Notes

Father: Francois Lalonde. At enlistment his address was 143 Delinelle St., Montreal, P.Q., Canada.

Research Notes

Service-number discrepancy: hospital documents on PDF pages 5 and 29 show 3161105, but the recruit form, medical history sheets, casualty form, discharge documents, and last-pay certificate consistently show 3161100. Retain 3161100 as the authoritative service number.
