The casualty form records T.O.S. 13 Apr 1918; transfer to the Canadian Engineers Training Depot at St. Johns on 27 Jun 1918; a 29 Jun 1918 leave entry; and on 8 Aug 1918 an S.O.S. entry stating that he was illegally absent, by Court of Inquiry held 7 Aug 1918, effective from 9 Jul 1918, followed by 'Deserter'. The discharge-document cover also explicitly labels him 'Deserter'. Accordingly the effective service termination date is 9 Jul 1918, not the August administrative/Court of Inquiry dates.
