Additional Service Notes

Drafted under the Military Service Act, John Patrick Murphy joined the 1st Depot Battalion, 1st Quebec Regiment at Montreal on 7 January 1918 as Private 3081198. He was treated for measles at Grey Nuns Convalescent Hospital in Montreal from 7 to 30 January 1918 and returned fit for duty. He embarked from Canada on 18 February 1918, arrived in England on 4 March, and was taken on strength of the 23rd Canadian Reserve Battalion at Bramshott on 5 March. He was admitted to No. 12 Canadian General Hospital at Bramshott with a left inguinal hernia on 13 June 1918. Later medical case sheets document an influenza illness in England; the surviving handwriting does not support a more precise facility/date sequence without speculation. He was temporarily attached to the 2nd Canadian Command Depot at Bramshott from 5 to 28 September 1918 and then returned to the 23rd Canadian Reserve Battalion. He served in England only, returned to Canada in 1919, and was discharged at Montreal on 6 July 1919 on demobilization.

Additional Next of Kin Notes

His sister Katherine Murphy of Ormstown, Quebec, was recorded as next of kin. The family form records him as single with no children and both parents deceased.
