James Gordon McWhinnie was a Presbyterian clerk from Ormstown, Quebec. He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force at Montreal on 25 May 1917. After training in England, he was posted to the 11th Canadian Siege Battery and embarked for France with the battery on 1 April 1918, serving with the 3rd Brigade, Canadian Garrison Artillery. He returned to Canada after the war and was discharged at Montreal on 12 May 1919 on demobilization.
